Dorm decor is a study in ever-evolving styles and tastes.  Gone are the dorm days of cinder block bookcases and anything will do furnishings.

Thank goodness the old-school school of thought has taken a page from the book of back-to-campus DIY dorm room decor ideas.

Updates + Embellishments = Wow Factor

embellish

Appliques and decorative hardware go a long way in the fight against bland, and a can of gold spray paint or brass caster cups will color your world and furniture legs.

DIY-furniture-embellishmentsWhat You’ll Need:

  • screwdriver
  • decorative hardware
  • tape measure or ruler
  • rosette appliques- see directions below.
  • adhesive caulk
  • gold spray paint
  • brass caster cup

I highly recommended that you paint/finish our appliques before you install them.  Once installed, you can apply any necessary touch‐up paint/finish.

Clean installation surface and back of appliques of all dirt and dust with a clean cloth or sponge.  Make sure that the surface and the back of the applique are completely dry before attempting installation.

Measure and mark the location where the applique is going to be installed.  Lay the applique face down on a soft surface that will not scratch/dent the applique detail.

Apply a ½” bead of adhesive caulk all the way around  the back edge of the applique.  When pressing the applique up against the surface, some adhesive caulk will seep out.

Smooth excess caulk around the applique with a finger or the putty
knife and apply extra caulk that is needed to fill in any
gaps.  Wipe off any excess adhesive caulk with a sponge or damp rag.

faux-fur-fabrics

Added to the prime DIY project list is taking a vintage office chair found at your favorite thrift shop, yard sale, or curbside boutique and zhushing it up  with a DIY faux fur seat cushion.

vintage-used-green-leather-industrial-style-office-chair

Purchase an inexpensive chair pad and get to covering!

What You’ll Need:

  • chair cushion
  • scissors
  • faux fur fabric
  • permanent fabric adhesive

Using a tape measure, measure the length of the chair pad from top to bottom from each bottom edge.

Add 2-4 additional inches to the measurements allowing for the fold.

Most of the faux fur fabrics available at Fabric.com run 54-58 inches wide. Cut fabric to size.

My upholstering formula is not rocket science.

Place the fabric fur side down on a flat surface. Place the chair cushion on fabric.

Working with one-side-at-a-time, apply a line of fabric glue along the edge.

Gently fold the fabric up over side of chair cushion to desired tightness.

Fold corner (like wrapping a present) and continue with the one-side-at-a-time glue and fold technique.

Trim excess fabric from sides and corners and voilà!

Adding A Luxe Look For Little Money

I have never decorated, flipped or remodeled for a client(s) who has not placed a budget in play.

Same goes for the projects we do here at Places In The Home.

An extra penny here and an extra dime there adds up to budget busting dollars.

Cost is the four letter word I hear most from project start to finish.

If you believe that I’ve got a Louisiana bayou to sell you.

All kidding aside- it is a known fact that for most of us the price tag heavily factors into the decorating we do, the decorative accessories we select, and the home decor accents we purchase in the pursuit of prettying things up around the house.

When the desired outcome is the look of luxe but the moolah to advance full sticker price ahead is not in the cards, these tips for adding a luxe look for little money do the trick.

Table Lamps

I love, love, love the instant chic factor a decorative table lamp lends to the ambiance of a space.

silver-fil-lamp

Finding luxe look for little money table lamps is a home decor store or online retailer visit away.

I always suggest selecting a table lamp rich in classic style, one that will stand the test of time and trend.

Do not buy into the fallacy that an inexpensive item will invariably look cheap or a quality appearance can only be achieved by spending big bucks.

Optical Illusions

Installing curtain and drapery hardware at the ceiling or molding line creates a visual illusion of height.

luxe

Take the luxe look for little money concept to the next phase with inexpensive drapery trims and decorative drapery medallion holdbacks found on sale or clearance.

Wallpaper Lined Drawers, Shelves & Bookcase Backs

Okay, you’ve selected a killer designer paint color for the exterior of a fabulous 3-drawer chest, linen armoire or bookcase.

What about the drawers, shelves and bookcase backs?

wallpaper-accents

Add a luxe look for little money to drawers, shelves and bookcases by lining with wallpaper.

The discounted, discontinued and closeouts section of online wallpaper sites and home decorating stores is a decoristas best friend.

I recently lucked up on a wallpaper clearance sale, and two double rolls for under $10 later a drawer lining plain to polished project produced the decorative oomph.

Lined drawers, shelves and bookcase backs offer up a stylish follow-through.

It’s all in the details.

ABCs of Affordable Accessorizing:
Art & Antiques, Bric-a-Brac, Conversation Pieces

It’s not how much an accessory cost but the look it affords.

An inexpensive piece of art, antique accessory, bric-a-brac or whimsical objet d’art piece can easily offer a luxe look when dramatically displayed.

A good eye paired with decorating determination will invariably spot a diamond in the rough.

To guarantee a luxe look result, place a piece above, atop or beside an ebony console or chair.

The color black is classically timeless, adds drama to the spaces it graces, and is considered a premier foundation and/or accent color in interior decorating.

Southern Style ShowhomeTraditional Home Southern Style Showhouse Family Room by Lance Jackson and David Ecton, Parker Kennedy

When I was in the initial buying stages for Hopefully Classic Antiques and Interiors, a local flea market dealer invited me to stop by to shop her inventory.

I did, and the first item I spotted was a small framed oil painting.

The subject of the painting slips my mind, but the frame was the diamond in the rough.

I could not believe how little the dealer was asking for the piece.

Maybe I need to add the words “or how little” to it’s not how much an accessory cost but the look it affords.

Dave the Builder panned the painting and the frame, but I knew it had the potential to be a beauty.

I scooped up the painting, and with a simple cleanup and quick application of matte spray paint proudly added it to the inventory, displaying the piece in a dramatic focal point feature.

The painting sold within one day of being at the shop.

Fresh Flowers

Fresh flowers drench a space in color, fill it with fragrance and enhance the surroundings with pervasive beauty.

Gather ye your Mason jars, dollar store containers, crystal goblets, Chinoiserie (SHēnˌwäz(ə)ˈrē) vases (since we’re talking luxe let’s pronounce it vahz, darling), watering cans, vintage crocks and antique teapots and fill them with blooms, stems, vines and/or branches from the garden, field, florist or local grocery flower department.

Sourcing and sightings of home decor accents is all in a day’s work and I love it!

When I started Places In The Home my objective was simple: to design an all things house that make a home show and tell, a sharing collective of knowledge and experience of interior decorating, home furnishings, decorative accents, home decor where to finds and gotta have it lists.

Four years later, I continue to be excited and inspired to show and tell you about items currently catching my eye.

Three or four drawer chests are just a thrift store, flea market or curbside boutique visit away.

For the retail fortunate, check out your nearest IKEA and the Rast 3 drawer chest.  At $34.99 + tax  it’s a bargain.

For the rest of us, I say add this baby into your online shopping cart and justify the shipping cost with my logic.

I couldn’t drive to Houston (closet IKEA) for $10 (the shipping cost).

Makes cent$.

Decorative hardware dresses the look, and a couple of coats of black paint adds the essential touch of drama.

My Under the Weather Reading List

Reading is proving to be a fundamental part of my under the weather reading list routine.

books

First up on my under the weather reading list is Paris Flea Market Style by Claudia Strasser.

The ooh la la factor and how to get it, emulate it, and incorporate it into our design and decor needs no introduction.

Paris-Flea-Market-Style

A smart, funny read with witty observations that rate hilarious on the laugh-o-meter, Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? (And Other Concerns) by Mindy Kaling is a gem of a good read.

This book accomplishes exactly what it sets out to do by taking the reader on a most entertaining ride with hilarity riding shotgun.

Seasonal Updating and Holiday Decorating: When Is Early Too Early?

Seasonal updating and holiday decorating season came on like gang busters this year.  From weather to color, fall is hands down my favorite time of year.  Fall is the one holiday you can get a lot of traction out of, decoratively speaking.  Seasonal statement pieces as well as fun pops of color become investment pieces, and nature is the ultimate and most affordable arts and crafts store there is.

A high-end luxury throw can be as important to seasonal updating as a bowl of acorns, nuts,  leaves or pine cones is to holiday decorating.

billy-baldwin

Planning and playing with design boards is part of my daily routine. Getting ideas down on a board puts collected inspiration in front of you and answers the “now, where did I see that _______?” question in the click of the mouse. Spending the weekend planning and playing with design boards gave way to observations colliding with inspiration, or the lack thereof.  I was satisfied with the interior decorating seasonal updates I came up with, but felt rushed to push the pieces of the fall decorating puzzle together like I was on a hurry up-everyone else is already through-and you haven’t even begun hard and fast deadline.

cast

The blogsophere is in full-on fall decorating mode.  For those of us who love to seasonally update and decorate our humble abodes inside and out, searching and sourcing ideas for inspiration begins many weeks out from the official start of the season.  Getting the jump on seasonal updating and decorating in order to get the most out of the beauty of a season is hard to resist,  but when is early too early?

calendar-HC

Holiday season at Hopefully Classic came earrrrrrrrly on the calendar.  Retail is a whole other beast when it comes to holiday decorating, merchandising and sales. I was Easter hopping in February and decking the halls decked out in shorts and flip flops in August.  By the time the actual holiday rolled around if I wasn’t careful I would be completely over it.  Staying one step out in front made me feel I was chasing my tail, and frankly, it took a huge hunk out of the holiday fun and celebration.

David Nettovia

I totally agree with David Netto’s observation.  Hate the chop, but that’s not the point.  In both my professional and personal experience I’ve learned to proceed with caution on the road of everybody else is doing it. Don’t let that be the driving force of your updating and decorating decisions.

Styling the Table Between Two Sofas: How To Style a Coffee Table

Attention grabbing titles stump me at times.  The backspace on this keyboard should start up its own CrossFit class because this baby gets in an impressive and exhaustive daily workout erasing first drafts, not so PG-13 wording and the like.

Title considerations for this post ranged from Not Another Boring How To Style a Coffee Table Post, Putting Stuff on the Coffee Table and Why It Matters and the winner, Styling The Table Between Two Sofas.

Anyway you title it, how to style a coffee table is a hot topic of decorating interest.

coffee-table-books

I like to incorporate individual style and objects that capture the soul of the life lived within your home.

The only hard-and-fast rule I follow in regards to how to style a coffee table is no sight obstruction.

I don’t know about you, but I hate to sit down to gab, read or watch television only to get right back up to move a decorative accent out of my sight line.

High, medium and low is a working concept with considerations to factor in.

When I’m styling a coffee table I sit down on sofa, chair, etc…  and choose the primary sight line.

X marks the center spot- the prime location for a medium or low height object placement.

The “outer” areas balance the method with graduated heights to continue the flow, theme and visual engagement.

how to style a coffee table

The rule of you effectively applies to decorating and should be beautifully evident throughout your home.

Styling a coffee table with a sense of individual style is easy.

A treasured keepsake, great read, conversation piece, a decorative box to house remotes (a necessary evil), framed picture of something, somewhere or someone that when you look at it a smile instantly touches your heart- the essentials!

Here’s the background on the pieces presently calling the top of my coffee table home.

shell

The shells were found on the beach in Corpus Christi, Texas by my mother when she was eight years old.

shell-Texas

My great-grandparents owned tourist courts in the beach area, and on one of the many trips to Corpus my mother picked up these shells.

Treasures of time and travel for sure.

rose-bowl

The rose bowl was an anniversary gift from Dave the Builder.

A  fellow antiques dealer brought it into the shop, and my heart skipped a beat.

Dave surprised me with it, I bawled like a baby, and up this keepsake went.

Fast forward to moving day when Miss Grace Kelly (me) dropped it, shattering it into several pieces.

The water works began, but I sucked it up and let it go.

No use crying over chipped and cracked porcelain- the thought behind the gift was still in one piece.

I picked up the pieces as best I could, placed them in a box, and set it out in the garage.

tall

Dave saw the box when he came in and asked me what had happened.

I filled him in, letting him know I had made peace with the pieces.

Dave wouldn’t hear of it.

He grabbed the glue and went to work.

When he finished gluing the pieces back in place he offered up a rather profound explanation.

He told me to look at it in a new light.

Things that are perfect one minute may not be so perfect the next.  That doesn’t mean you throw it away- you dig in with determination and fix it.

The cracked and glued back together rose bowl is even more beautiful to me now.
