A spring cleaning and Goodwill week pairing worked to my advantage this week. Our nephew is getting married next weekend, and Places In The Home is celebration central. We will be hosting family from near and far, the Canadian snowbird son and his fiancée are coming home, and we are in full on here comes the bride and groom mode. Company’s coming, and I’ve been gathering, purging, cleaning, organizing, cursing (spring cleaning has been known to drive you to it!) and editing like nobody’s business. Fortunately, I hit the jackpot on a recent Goodwill hunting visit to our local Goodwill where I found useful and decorative items for my spring cleaning and organizational needs.
And my front door wreath perfect for weekend wedding celebration decorating needs.
Another celebration I am taking part in is #GoodwillWeek. Our local Goodwill proves visit after visit to be an excellent source for kitchen, home decor and vintage finds. From donation to decorating, the Goodwill process is a win-win situation- one that gives as good as it gets. You never know what Goodwill goodies you will find as you shop a little and save a lot browsing Goodwill’s awesomely affordable inventory.
Spring cleaning time offers an excellent opportunity to donate items you no longer wear or housewares you no longer use to one of more than 4,700 Goodwill donation centers across the U.S. and Canada. Goodwill works in communities providing people with skills and job training, employment placement and other support services so that they are stable both at home and in the workplace.
I love the look in the image above, and will definitely be on the lookout for baskets on my Goodwill hunting trips. DIY fans and decoristas in search of a quality bargain and stylish decor pieces appreciate the shop a little-save a lot concept Goodwill offers, and donating to and supporting Goodwill and Goodwill week is always in style.
When I take a visual inventory of the curated style in my own home and the home decor pieces featured in this post, I’m reminded of the spaghetti sauce ad from campaigns past that proclaims, “it’s in there!”
The accent table is perhaps the most genius of of home decor pieces. A contemporary spot piece such as a small gold accent table(s) elegantly lends a modern twist to a predominately classic interior. These are just a sampling of the many styles and finishes available at varying price points in the home decor market.
If you are fortunate enough to have access to the wonderful world of antiques stores, auctions and flea markets, keep an eye out for a diamond in the rough settee. A stunning French settee at an equally stunning price reupholstered in the designer fabric of your choice could become a custom focal point piece to DIY for.
New Orleans interior designer Valorie Hart notes in a recent post on The Visual Vamp that silk drapes continue to be a popular choice with decoristas in New Orleans while the color orange remains a top color preference for draperies.
A look-see of this decorating show and tell counted as the second time in one day my decorating eye crossed paths with orange drapes- reason enough to give a second thought to changing the color of the drapes in the den.
Antiques, lanterns, ceiling medallions, dupioni silk drapes, decorative objects d’art, ornamental accents, chandeliers dripping in crystal prisms, decorative mirrors and frames scrolled in gold leaf- the New Orleans influence comes home through signature style home decor pieces.
Luxury bedding advances a gorgeous blissful beautiful sleep. Hectic, over-scheduled, and thanks to daylight savings time long days of doing what we do tire and tucker. A respite from the grind beckons, and the comfort of luxury bedding sets in motion the restorative benefits of the gorgeous blissful beautiful sleep.
Luxury bedding in the style of European antique heirloom and Italian renaissance textiles bedding emulates the elegant finery of true antique and vintage linens crafted from fine laces and linens. Gracefully romantic on all thread counts, the bedtime story to tell is the stunning presence heirloom inspired bedding and textiles lend to the feel of your sleep sanctuary.
Where Egyptian cotton sateen or seamless silk cotton is the twin, full, queen or king bedding standard for some, cotton percale or linen is the only choice of bedding fabric for others.
Luxurious, comfortable, gorgeous blissful beautiful sleep sheets. A personal style spin followed with the addition of leopard pillow cases. Like a good night’s rest, adding a sense of personal style is essential.
Setting the tone and the texture for a beautiful sleep scene primps and pampers- an at home version of hotel turndown service. Embroidered bed linens paired with monogrammed shams create a dreamy combination.
Crochet pillowcases, crisp cotton sheets fresh from the clothesline, a vintage chenille bedspread, and a bedside window raised just enough to allow the morning breeze to fill the room with the scent of African violets made a lasting impression on my soul and senses. The combination of comfortable surroundings and simple yet elegant furnishings equated to a brand of luxury I only wish I could replicate.
No one can ever accuse me of getting in a hurry to put together the Places In The Home New Year New Home Decor Trends 2017 list. Am I the only one who finds getting back to business after the holidays a tad difficult? Marching to the beat of your own drum pays off more times than not. At the last count, I have seven drafts for design and decorating show and tell posts open, and a matched number of design and decorating mockups started. I remind myself hurried decisions show a hurried look, and are never germane to the creative process.
A new year proves an exceptional motivator, and when motivation comes together with inspiration the result can be beautiful, n’est-ce pas? The Places In The Home New Year New Home Decor Trends 2017 is ready offers a style spotting preview of home decor trends for your decorating consideration.
Lucite, or acrylic, is a clear favorite. Lucite is the name brand of acrylic name for a kind of acrylic resin that is basically the same thing as Plexiglas. As the fictional Dr. Sheldon Cooper (Jim Parsons) of The Big Bang Theory explains, “Jacuzzi is a commercial brand, hot tub is the generic term, i.e., all Jacuzzis are hot tubs, but not all hot tubs are Jacuzzis.”
One word stands out on the New Year New Home Decor Trends 2017 list like no other.
Every home, if only in one very special place and in one very central space, deserves the period at the end of the sentence decor statement made by adding an antique piece of furniture or accessory into its furnishings portfolio.
Jewel tones envelope the space in a full-on color Odyssey. Rich in depth, tone and never met a home decor accent these colors don’t love to embellish influence, jewel tones make a compelling argument for striking color implementation.
Kitchen islands will move further into the kitchen design spotlight in 2017. Central to prep and functionality, the kitchen island is coming into its own as a standard vs. optional feature in today’s kitchen design.
Don’t forget the host! Hit the jackpot with a game night themed gift for the host.
“Seasons” Greetings! I love the scent and the idea of a rosemary Christmas tree. I would always use one at the antique shop during the holidays for the visual and aroma effect. One of my best clients looked forward to holiday open house and what I called the annual Hopefully Classic Rosemary Rub.
What’s the Hopefully Classic Rosemary Rub you ask?
Gently rub the rosemary leaves with both hands for holiday good luck and health, and the fragrance from the tree stays with you- a holiday bonus. A Christmas tree shaped rosemary tree is festive function at its aromatic best.
In these hustling and bustling holiday times, taking a teatime out to relax with a cup of tea, author a handwritten note of greetings or thanks to a friend or client, or to enjoy the scent of a favorite candle in a session of aroma therapy is holiday highly suggested.
The key to a great hostess gift is one that reflects a sense of style and ‘with you in mind’ thoughtfulness.
Home bar styling ideas for a chic cocktail station go stylishly beyond a portable card table or kitchen counter space. The home bar serves up more than just cocktails when the spirits, wine, bar and glassware and beverage accouterments is displayed on a styled cart, cabinet, accent table, bookshelf, inside an antique armoire or atop a mid-century modern credenza.
Styling a home bar works off the same principle applied to styling a coffee table. X marks the center spot- the prime location for a medium or low height object placement. The “outer” areas balance the method with graduated heights to continue the flow, theme and visual engagement.

Before many of us became smarter and healthier and the laws of the land changed, the ash tray was part of the cocktail bar landscape. An Art Deco ash tray repurposed as a bar spoon holder makes a great conversation piece.
Making a bold statement with bold home decor and the bold, color wheel wow and oh so beautiful decor accessories drenched in bold home decor color is a bold move in the right and decoratively daring direction.
Rather experimenting on a small scale or full-on bold color saturation, working with bold home decor colors may be easier to do in baby steps for the decor timid or undecided. The shallow end of the bold home decor color pool is a great place to begin.
This contemporary armoire definitely will not fade into the woodwork, and that is exactly why I love it!
Fabulously funky, extravagantly elegant and guaranteed to produce a bold reaction, try coloring your world and space with one focal point piece.
From floor to ceiling, a brilliant contrast created through bold color, pattern and texture combined with distinctive accents and home decor accessories notes a truly unique design and decor visual experience.
Subtle boldness is not a firm contradiction of terms, but more a design approach to keep in mind. This example beautifully illustrates the role color plays in bold home decor accessories servings as both focal point and integral color infusion.
Revisiting and refreshing vintage posts is the norm for most bloggers in these slow and easy summer months. Readers utilize every moment of these summer long days and outdoor living nights to get the most out of their summer season, and I totally respect that. While I hope these new reads and range of topics keeps us engaged during the summer, I also hope you will enjoy the updated posts as well.
Every now and then it is necessary to perform housekeeping and updating to clear the cobwebs away from older posts, revivify information and renew resources. Garden Home Decor Colors is one of those times and one of those posts.
Summer home decor updates in from the garden home decor colors are naturally influenced by the seasonal palette influenced by the deep, rich, bright and vibrant shades represented at the farmers market. It’s a growing trend!
As requested, today’s post is an updated version of a summer entertaining suggestion post from a couple of years ago. Good information is always worthy of repeating, and I am happy to share these suggestions new to the Places In The Home summer entertaining repertoire. Summer officially arrives in two weeks with the summer solstice gift of extra daylight. Talk about the ultimate summer entertaining hostess gift! Invite vibrant color, easy entertaining tips, and fun home decor touches to the party and prepare to impress.
Summer nights frame the art of entertaining with a canvas of color and hosting ease. For an evening under the stars, bring down the house lights and light the night with soft accent lighting. A casual yet dramatic effect can be easily achieved by strategically placing lanterns or glass jar luminaries along a walkway.
Tiki torches, table lamps on loan for the evening from your interior home decor, garden chandeliers, and decorative paper lanterns also make great options in the quest to create a comfortable and inviting atmosphere.

A midsummer night’s entertaining dream becomes a reality with these quaint and stunning homemade hurricanes. I discovered this impressive look last week in the new issue of Ladies Home Journal and pinned it to my Pinterest account.
Simply fill clean canning jars with dried beans to hold the votive candles in their upward position. Securely hang the mason jars at various heights from trees with twine. A simple and affordable look to add to the perfect summer evening. The vintage look fits right in with the KISS of summer- keep it summer simple. Glass is slippery when wet and breakable to boot, so summer soirée with caution.
If you’ve hung out at Places In The Home in person or in readership, you are aware of my entertaining relationship with the clay flower pot. Give me a reason to turn a flower pot into a serving piece and it is summer soirée party on. I’ll never forget the look I got the first time I announced we were having pot brownies at our pot party to a co-hostess. I don’t believe I have ever clarified something so quickly before or since.
Anywho, clay flower pots are an inexpensive and summer appropriate alternative to traditional serving pieces. Baked beans, barbecued wings, Creole seasoned french fries, baked Vidalia onions, summer sausage- all great “pot” options.
Why not wrap the bottom of each chair leg with clear plastic wrap? It may be a tad time-consuming, but it will save time on the clean up end of the party. Be as pre-party proactive as possible with certain tasks. It’s a summer entertaining essential skill for the host and/or hostess to hone.
Hello, my name is summer. With the very, very good points of summer outdoor living and summer entertaining comes the very real concern over controlling mosquitoes. It is suggested that burning sage or rosemary repels mosquitoes. The mosquito killing power is in the smoke so I’m thinking summer fire pit or campfire natural necessity.
I like the point in the party when the food and drink has hit the spot, the music is summer smooth, the outdoor party life is kicking up a notch and the company and the conversation is hitting all the right notes. Now comes summer relaxation party pail time. I make up these party pails beforehand and add the chilled and cold items before handing them out.
I fill plastic beach pails from the dollar store with his or hers flip-flops, individual aluminum spray bottles filled with chilled homemade rose water (the guys love this stuff almost as much as the gals), cold cucumber slices in freezer bags and Burt’s Bees Cucumber & Sage facial cleansing towelettes (love the scent). These always make a big splash.
Our latest eBay search for project materials brought forth open tabs and mounds, let me look at this one thing patience, and a DIY recipe for Citrus Sugar Hand Scrub. More on that point later in the post. Dave the Builder is not used to with unorthodox way of treasure hunting. Assuring Dave I am able to walk andchewgum at thesametime, I jumped around the pages of eBay with expert keyboard precision. As Dave measured and mulled his decisions, I searched and made a decision of my “own” to click Buy It Now on this darling vintage pottery creamer.
Pattern, texture and color guide the selection process of interior design, decorating and home decor accents and accessories. Take as an example the PTC value of this creamer. The pattern is unique as far as corn pottery patterns go, the texture is raised in matte perfection, and the color trio of pink, green and worn over time white blend together to create subtle soft tones. Add to the mix the vivid childhood memory of a similar creamer my Mother once owned and a curiosity piece match made in collectibles heaven.
Presentation and placement is key when selling an item. Stores know it, sites know it, and decoristas know it. It’s the package that sells the product, and the placement that delivers the decorative oomph.
Home decor accessories and accents placed in unexpected spaces and used in unusual ways make for the most interesting conversation pieces.
I am constantly arranging and rearranging smalls to create vignettes and focal point displays. The quickest way to combat decorative complacency is to design and decorate outside the lines. A vintage creamer is repurposed as a cosmetic caddy, a porcelain bone dish finds new life as a jewelry holder, and an antique silver powder jar becomes a Mother’s Day gift filled with the latest recipe from the Places In The Home test kitchen.
