Show and Tell Worthy Home Decor Items of Note

Searching, sourcing and scouring home decor and interior decorating sites over the holidays brought forth several show and tell worthy home decor items of note.   I put the copy and paste command through its paces and filed the need to know info under home decor items of note.   This stuff comes in handy at one time or another in the daily all things house that make a home process.

This next item of note 2016 is not a spring cleaning hint or tip, but rather a year round dust busting must do. Cleaning light fixtures, light bulbs and lampshades isn’t the most glamorous household cleaning jobs, but one that shines a little light on a dust free situation. Did you know cleaning your light bulbs can make your room up to 20% brighter?  Cleaning your light bulbs also helps to avoid the disgusting burning smell often associated with a dust-coated bulb.  I hate that smell!

Williamsburg-chandelier1stdibs

Make sure to only clean a light bulb or lighting fixture that is turned off with all bulbs cool to the touch.  Do not spin-turn-rotate the light fixture to clean or wipe bulbs as this can cause the fixture to fall or wiring in the housing to fray.  I learned this lesson one Saturday afternoon at the antiques shop.  I was cleaning a gorgeous antique Williamsburg chandelier like the one in the above image.  We had a good crowd in at the shop, I was in my height of great deals glory and the style conversation was lively.  Being too tuned into the latter and less into practicing safe light bulb and light fixture cleaning techniques, I Valley Forged on.  I spun the fixture and the sparks flew, literally.  Lesson learned!  One final bulb and fixture cleaning note: never spray cleaning solution around lighting fixture or light bulbs.  The good people at 1000Bulbs.com offer great info on How to Clean Your Light Bulbs, Lampshades and Fixtures.

The Gotta Have It List Summer 2015 Edition

Making things pretty on a penny is always a subject of interest to me, clients, friends, family and judging from the emails I receive, most of my readers.

the-gotta-have-it-list-summer-2015-edition

The summer retail season is heating up, and the stores, outlets and online sights we love to call favorites are rolling out seasonal finds much to the delight of decorators, designers and gotta have it guys and gals.  Seasonal decorating is nothing new, but the items in which to accomplish this mission of home decor beautification are.  Summer style spotting with pen, paper and bookmark icon ready to jot and save is proving to be successful on the summer finds front.   Here is the first round of the Gotta Have It List summer 2015 edition.

Quorum-chandelier1

This is not the first time the Quorum  6 Light Salento Chandelier in Persian White has made an appearance on the Gotta Have It list.  Why the encore feature?   It begins and ends with my all time  favorite four-letter word, SALE!

H & M continues to impress with decorative accents big on visual quality and style at an affordable price.  You just can’t go wrong with an accent piece in the decorating darling duo of black and white.  A classic color combination paired with a trending pattern in pop of zebra detail places this ceramic jar accent at the top of the Gotta Have It list summer 2015 edition.

eastlake-chiarStyle Me Pretty

Named after English architect Charles L. Eastlake, the design of this late 19th century style of furniture is one of my least favorites.  This mass produced style is actually more of a “in the style of” interpretation of what American professional cabinet makers serving as master furniture designers deemed an authentic replica of Eastlake’s design.  Charles Eastlake was not impressed with the results.  Mr. Eastlake and I are of the same school of thought.  His words say it far better than mine.

“I find American tradesmen continually advertising what they are pleased to call Eastlake furniture, the production of which I have had nothing whatever to do, and for the taste of which I should be very sorry to be considered responsible.”

~ Charles L. Eastlake

That being said, the Eastlake style chair in the above image from Style Me Pretty demonstrates how a chic update can transform an otherwise dated piece into a hip and happening accent chair focal point.  Not all antique furniture pieces are prime candidates for paint, but in the case of Eastlake furniture I say pick it out, shake it up and paint it pretty.

Late summer means treasure hunting days at one of my favorite haunts, Korner Shoppe Antiques.  This gem of a joint is full to the gills with my kind of treasures, trinkets and trash.  Inspiration struck as I perused the shoppe’s Facebook page so I did what all deal dreaming decoristas do- I sketched out plans for an upcoming project around copper pots and pans.

Holiday Drama: Home Decor Statement Pieces

Dramatic statement pieces aren’t expressly exclusive to holiday fashions. Decoristas never need an excuse to home decor accent and accessorize, nor do they shy from reminding Santa it’s perfectly fine to add home decor statement pieces to his list.  At this most festive and stylish time of year, home is the star of the meeting, greeting and eating holiday show. There’s no time like the present to add a few home decor statement pieces to your holiday wishlist.  I connected the dots to this Christmas wishlist conclusion as I sketched out a potential design alternative for a client.

kitchen-sketch1

The homeowner wants several items that will stretch the budget tighter than tight, and realizing that fact commented, “I guess I could always ask for it as a Christmas present.”  Christmas bells went off and the Elves got busy dropping hints.  The piece in the image below stresses my tried and true belief that to complete a statement space you must include a statement piece in black.  The slender depth of the Pulaski Tara Hall Chest is a perfect fit for a breakfast area.  Accent chests offer superb storage and style options for dining rooms as well as kitchens and breakfast areas.

Look Who’s Making Changes Now

Spare time is a hot commodity around our house lately. Busy is good, but it makes finding the time to concentrate on and complete in house projects difficult.  Our dining room redo project came to an abrupt halt when the first and second paint sample choices on the wall fell short of decorative expectation. It’s taken a while to bring this dining room redo to fruition, but look who’s making changes now.  Two gallons of Valspar Creme Fraiche and decorative determination lead the charge to change.

Valspar-creme-fraiche

Lantern love has made its way from outdoor fixture to dining room focal point. To glass pane, or not to glass pane, that is the question bugging the &#$! out of me.

lantern

I’m going to bring you all into the loop, answering the question of why I work around the dark (very dark) dining room furniture.  For those of you who do not know, my parents live with me and Dave the Builder. The dining room furniture belongs to my parents, and under the circumstances surrounding the reason why they live with us in the first place, Dave and I have made many concessions regarding furniture.  One of my recent Facebook posts includes the Franklin D. Roosevelt quote, “Peace, like charity, begins at home.”  I can attest to the truth in that statement!

lantern-fixture1That’s Better!

Coming back around to topic- the combination of the dark wall color, the absence of natural light, and the dark Mahogany dining furniture brought me to my this has got to go moment.  As much as I hate to do it, an impending breakup with an old favorite, Sherwin-Williams Fired Brick, is a must.

captains-chair

Going with a different fixture and repainting the space in a lighter shade of gorgeous did wonders to light the way to change.  Now we are getting somewhere.  Repurposing and editing from within gave me the idea to replace the Chippendale captain’s chairs with a matching set of upholstered arm chairs. The look is looking like it will strike the right amount of both visual and style mix balance.

dining-room-redo

As it is with interior design and interior decorating projects, accents and accessories often must be introduced in stages as the install advances. Trial, error, patience and two coats go with the territory.  Stay tuned.

The Switch Is On: Decorating Ideas

Inspiration is the  framework of decorating ideas.

decorating ideas

We all glean “eye”deas from home decor and home furnishings seen on blogs, websites,  in stores, showrooms and shelter magazines. Isn’t that the idea?  Some of the ideas work and some don’t, but try we do.  Beauty and style only fail when inspiration ceases to exist.

Portfolio 5" x 5" Brown Chandelier Lamp Shade

via

Determination is a powerful force. What does determination have to do with a chandelier shade you may wonder? Simple math.  $5.97 each  X 12 shades = $71.64.   That’s $71.64  I could have put toward the cost of a new chandelier and did not, so you can bet I’m gonna make these work.  I’m wired like that.

French crystal chandelier

With the intent of introducing a French modern decor to the dining room, it makes total sense to move the crystal chandelier to the dining room and the Williamsburg to the foyer.  Let’s project!

chandelier installation

The Williamsburg chandelier is a lovely fixture, but my thinking has been it is in need of decorative lagniappe beyond the chandelier shades.  Remember my idea for converting craft finials into chandelier drops?  I will still be doing that for an all wood English chandelier, but once the Williamsburg found its new home in the foyer all was, and is, decoratively well.

foyer chandelier

The shade is not crooked, the angle of the shot was just right for this unwanted effect.  I do want to call your attention to the blue lining of the chandelier shades in the bottom left image in the collage above.  At night when the light fixture is turned on the color is so rich and the cast from the brown exterior and blue lining combination is phe-nom-e-nal!  We measured the height of the fixture pre-install for clearance assurance.  There are times when unforeseen issues arise. Dave the Builder & Son  informed me due to wiring safety and placement consideration the height would come in over the initial projected measurement. There goes my idea for modifying the center ring with a finial.  Too many family members blessed with height guarantees an unfortunate introduction to the low hanging finial.  Adapt, proceed, and project on!

light fixture removal

Onward and upward we go with a wiring modification,  a coat of fresh ceiling paint and  install of the crystal chandelier in the dining room.  Stay tuned.
