Let’s Get Growing: Spring Herb Day

Fairs, exhibitions and festivals benefiting the preservation of historic sights, homes and buildings spring up this time of year.

One such local institution held its spring herb day sale-a-bration over the weekend.

The scent of fresh herbs gets the spring herb day let’s get growing excitement going.

Get Outside by Robert Palmer is the tune of the day and a dandy one indeed to spring herb day to.

My herb love grows where my rosemary, mint, and thyme grows.

I’m discovering the many uses of mint past its herb status of required greenery in the Southern garden color palette and glass of sweet tea.

Mint is easy to grow.  The fragrance of mint will vary with variety as will the taste.  Fresh or dried, mint is a broad range herb used to season beverages, desserts, soups, vegetables, and meats.

Rosemary is an aromatic evergreen of Mediterranean origin, an herb that pairs well with poultry, pork, lamb, fish, breads, vegetables, tomato based sauces, soups and infused oils.  French and Italian dishes especially benefit from the robust seasoning.  Rosemary plants thrive in hot and dry climates.

I am seriously entertaining the thought of using this carrot planter as the focal point of my indoor herb garden.

The smell of fresh herbs goes well with the ooh la la factor, and is stylishly accomplished with a rattan wall planter.

You can’t make this stuff up folks.

Ina does love her garden.

On a recent repeat episode of Barefoot Contessa Ina plans, prepares, plates and presents a surprise dinner for Jeffrey in the garden.

Clear glass hurricane lanterns, pillar candles, ferns from the garden, white garden roses, and planter  made a simple yet elegant garden style show.

How keep it stunningly simple is that?

A search and source session for the hurricane lanterns Ina Garten uses came up empty handed, but look at what I did find.

Being born, raised and living the outdoor living life in Louisiana, the word hurricane typically is not equated with beauty, but this gorgeous hotel glass hurricane with rope and burned copper detail is a beauty!

Delicious dishes and stylish settings get the taste party started.

A sprinkle here, a dash of that, and a generous serving of it’s all in the details indisputably takes the look and the flavor from ordinary to distinctive.

How To: Chandelier Selection and Hanging Tips

During one recent phone conversation with our son he asked me for my professional advice in regards to chandelier selection and hanging tips.  The newlyweds are moving into a new house, and it’s all things house that make a new home question and answer time.  The internet is a wonderful means for viewing properties and decorating consultations, keeping me and Dave the Builder in the loop.  As much as I would love to hop a flight to Manitoba once a month, this thing called everyday life in Louisiana gets in the way.

The nerve.

The big move is less than a week away, and the activities that comes with packing up one house to move to another lead our conversations.  Frogbox delivered boxes today (great concept) and now the real fun begins.

The existing Bohemian glass overlay dining room chandelier, lovely as it is, is not a mix or a match with or to the taste of the new residents.  Keep scale and proportion in mind.  The dining room has an 8 foot chandelier height, so I suggest hanging the new orb chandelier in an approximate range of 30 to 34 inches over the dining table.  When I’m styling a coffee table, I sit down on the sofa in order to establish the primary sight line.  Same theory works here.  Take a seat at the table and establish the sight line.  The installed fixture should in no way interfere with the dining experience nor hinder eye contact between diners.

Chandelier Selection and Hanging Tips

Width:

To determine the proper width and height of a chandelier for the room, simple math enters into the picture.  For the chandelier width, measure the length of the room in feet.  Now measure the width of the room in feet.  Add those two numbers together.  Convert that number to inches.  The result is the number for the width (diameter) in inches for your chandelier .

LENGTH + WIDTH =   CHANDELIER WIDTH
       (in feet)                             (in inches)

For example:

Dining room measures 10′ x 12′.

10 + 12 = 22

Select a 22 inch wide chandelier.

Quick Tips:

For a room 10′ x 10′ or smaller, your fixture should be 17 to 20 inches wide.

For a room approximately 12′ x 12′ in size,  select a fixture in the 22 to 27 inches wide range.

For a room approximately 14′ x 14′ in size,  select a fixture in the 24 to 32 inches wide range.

Height:

To determine the chandelier height, measure the height of the room from floor to ceiling.  Multiply room height number X 3 to get the recommended measurement in inches.

ROOM HEIGHT  x 3 =   CHANDELIER HEIGHT
(in feet)                               (in inches)

Hanging Height:

Working with an 8 foot ceiling height, you will want to position the bottom of the chandelier 32-34 inches above the tabletop.

If your ceiling is higher than 8 feet, mount the chandelier an additional 3 inches higher for each foot of ceiling.

Terracotta Studio

With a pendant chandelier, position the fixture 30 to 34 inches above the tabletop.

Style at Home ~ DecorPad

For lighting fixture placement over a kitchen island, hang the fixture at a height of 32-34 inches from the top of the counter to the bottom of the light.

Norman Design Group, Inc.

For optimum light love presence in a foyer with a 9-10 foot ceiling height,  hang the chandelier so the bottom sits at least 7 feet above the floor.  In a two-story foyer, hang the chandelier at eye level when viewed from the second floor.

Crisp Architects

Advice and suggestions are meant to make the all things house that make a home process easier.  I hope these chandelier selection and hanging tips help to answer the what size is best and how high to hang questions you may have.

Two Peas In A Stylish Pod: Art and Interior Design

Art and interior design are like two peas in a stylish pod.

Fresh starts, fresh vegetables, and fresh colors do the body, mind, soul, and home good.

Just ask Sasha Emerson.

The Los Angeles based interior designer is mastering the art of personal downsizing without sacrificing the creature comforts of home through art and interior design.

As explained in “Sasha Emerson’s California Cottage -Funky Decor Ideas”  in Country Living magazine, scaling down from an expansive 4500 square feet home to half that in an English-style cottage signals it’s edit-yard sale-Craigslist-donate-giveaway time.

As they say, you can’t fit a square peg in a round hole.

I know.

I’ve tried.

It ain’t happening.

Repurposing from within allowed Sasha’s decorative integrity to remain intact.  She discovered balance and comfort frame a pretty picture through art and interior design.

Paint Brushes in an English Pea Can by Elizabeth Blaylock

I’m forever reminding clients and fellow decoristas the importance of incorporating a sense of you into your design and decorating scheme.

The art of individuality is paramount to personal style, and what better place to express yours than house and home.

Imagine your home as your canvas.

Dip your brush in a palette of personal style and paint a gorgeous scene of individuality throughout.

Art is the manifestation of creative expression rooted in imagination, emotion, and inspiration.

Let me ask you something, what is not art?

McGaw Graphics Campbell’s Soup I: Green Pea, 1968 by Andy Warhol

When I first saw the pop of art, it immediately evoked thoughts of weekend grocery store excursions to our local  A & P- my mother’s idea of big fun.

Looking back it was.

Thinking about split pea art and interior design brings back memories of shopping at A & P and the display feature for School Days Brand Early June Peas.

Design and color are the cornerstones of visual merchandising.

I vividly remember brand labels rich in color, distinctive font and visual design.

The aforementioned School Days peas and the I remember it as if it were yesterday red tomato-green lettuce leaves- navy blue background Ann Page Mayonnaise label serves memory and a craving for a spring Easter comfort food classic.

This comfort food recipe for pea salad is uncomplicated, styled for a classic taste, and quick to please.

I liken it to the creature comforts of home through art and interior design and memories of the walks down the aisles of A & P hand in hand with my darling Mother.

I’ve learned so much from both.

English Pea Salad

Ingredients

2 large hard-boiled eggs

1 yellow bell pepper

2 oz. Cheddar cheese

½  c. mayonnaise

½  c. sour cream

3 tbsp. dried basil

2 tbsp. finely chopped red onion

2 tsp. chopped pimiento

1 tsp. Apple-Cider Vinegar

1 tsp. sugar

1 tsp. soul-food seasoning or seasoned salt

1 tsp. granulated garlic

½  tsp. Freshly ground pepper

2 dash Hot sauce

60 oz. early peas (such as Le Sueur)

Directions

In a large bowl, combine all the ingredients except the peas, mixing well. Stir in the peas.  Refrigerate the salad for at least 10 hours or up to overnight.  Serve at room temperature.

Country Living

With spring and Easter right around the corner, I thought I would include this two peas in a pod recipe for Sweet Pea and Ricotta Tart from Good Housekeeping.

Sweet Pea and Ricotta Tart

Ingredients

Tart Crust

1 ¼ cup all-purpose flour

¼ tsp. salt

5  Tablespoons cold butter

3 Tablespoons trans-fat free vegetable shortening

ice water

Filling

2 teaspoons olive oil

1  medium leek, chopped

2  cups fresh or frozen (thawed) peas

1  Tablespoon fresh lemon juice

¾  cup ricotta

4 oz. cream cheese, softened

¼  cup grated Pecorino cheese

½  teaspoon grated lemon zest

½  cup microsprouts or microgreens

Directions

Make the Crust:
In the bowl of a food processor, blend flour and salt. Add butter and shortening and pulse until mixture resembles coarse crumbs.

Sprinkle in 3 to 5 tablespoons ice water, one tablespoon at a time, pulsing after each addition, until large, moist crumbs just begin to form.  Shape dough into disk; wrap in plastic wrap and refrigerate 30 minutes or overnight. (If chilled overnight, let dough stand 30 minutes at room temperature before rolling.)

Preheat oven to 400 degrees F. Roll pie crust into a 12″ circle and fit into a 9″ pie plate.  Trim excess dough, leaving 1″ overhang; tuck overhang under and crimp edges.

Line dough with large sheet of parchment paper or foil; fill with pie weights or dried beans.  Bake 15 minutes or until dough is set. Remove parchment with weights and bake until crust is golden brown, 8 to 10 minutes more. Remove from oven; let cool completely on wire rack.

Make Filling:
In a 10″ skillet, heat oil on medium heat. Add leek and ¼ teaspoon each salt and pepper.  Cook until leek is tender, stirring occasionally, about 3 minutes.  Add peas and cover; cook until tender, stirring once halfway through, 3 to 5 minutes.  Let mixture cool, then stir in lemon juice.

In a medium bowl, stir ricotta, cream cheese, pecorino, lemon zest, and 1/8 teaspoon salt until well-combined.  Spread in cooled pie shell.  Top with cooled pea mixture and garnish with microsprouts.
