The big blogging plan to share with you pops of 4th of July party ideas for your copying, ordering, and/or purchasing consideration fizzled out like a firecracker with no pizzazz.  An area wide internet outage hit the Places In The Home neighborhood last week, and with it went my connection to the world wide web.  That’s two internet outages in one month, but’s who’s counting?

Handbag charms as napkin rings?  Absolutely!  I picked up six of these long fringe handbag charms on clearance at Rue21 for $1.20 each to use as napkins rings and parting party favors.  Love the look, the price and the dual purpose.  Blooming blue hydrangeas from the yard of a very generous and giving neighbor will star in the centerpiece arrangement along with a trio of small American flags.  Simple.  Affordable.  Appropriate.

Our star spangled celebration menu takes a celebratory cue from the best part of the summertime bounty- fresh from the farmers market fruits and vegetables.  I am entertaining the thought of developing a recipe for s’mores cake to debut over the 4th of July holiday weekend.  Fresh beans, roasting marshmallows, and bursts of color on the table and in the sky. That’s how we snap, crackle and pop a 4th of July party in the USA at Places In The Home.

Halloween Happenings

October is an eventful month at the Places In The Home corral however, the corral is anything but ok these days when it comes to the business of all things house that make a home.  Let me ‘splain.  In the grand scheme of blogging things, one (me) simply can’t get the job done, posts written and images photoshopped unless the desktop computer and monitor work, and work they don’t.  This recent development is not my idea of frighteningly fun Halloween happenings, and trying to undo this sinister snafu without losing my mind and my religion is the trick.

monitor-brokenEvil!

Where there’s a will, there’s a way.  Although working on the notebook computer is no treat, the trick is to drink apply the principle of adjustment. Adjusting is the theme of this week.  Our city government announced this morning that local trick-or-treating will now take place on Friday evening.  The forecast is shaping up to be an ugly event making Halloween trick-or-treating on Saturday a washout.  Our Halloween celebration is still on, but with an adjustment or two of its own.  Call it a trick-or tweaking.

No rain event will poison the party atmosphere at our Halloween at Places In The Home party.

Kentucky Derby Days Are Here Again

Kentucky Derby days are here again.  The Most Exciting Two Minutes In Sports takes places on the first Saturday in May.  Louisville, Kentucky rolls out a Southern welcome to thousands of attendees while Churchill Downs takes the lead as Kentucky Derby festivities and finery celebration central.

churchill-downs-kentucky-derby-louisvilleArchitectural Digest

Iconic to sight and tradition, the landmark Twin Spires of Churchill Downs were designed by architect Joseph Dominic Baldez. The twin hexagonal spires stand tall as the premier architectural feature so closely associated with Churchill Downs and the Kentucky Derby.

Time-honored traditions and thoroughbred horse racing reigns supreme on Kentucky Derby Saturday. Red roses, mint juleps and fascinating choices of Derby Day finery fill the grandstands, box seats and infield of Churchill Downs as well as themed Kentucky Derby Days parties.

My parents and I attended the Kentucky Derby in the late 1970’s. Experiencing the Derby live and in person is a thrilling event, but once was enough for us.

Expensive?  Yes!

Crowded?  Oh, dear goodness, yes, and that was 30+ years ago!

I can only imagine the crowd control issues involved with the attendance numbers of today’s Kentucky Derby.

Are we glad we attended?  You betcha!

 Get Down and Derby Playlist

Our current Kentucky Derby Days party is an at home affair.  We are not above breaking out the good stuff as in fashion jewelry, hats, tableware, get down and Derby tunes and Kentucky bourbon in My Old Kentucky Home fashion.

The Run for the Roses is a win, place and show tradition for this horse racing enthusiast family, and it’s a sure bet next Saturday the hats, the party and the race will be on.  The Derby Day tablescape always includes red roses, a hat of top, feathered or derby style, a toast to jockey silks and a creative spin on cocktail and dinner napkins.

Kentucky-Derby-invitation

I’m using the red rose paper cocktail napkins and considering red toile fabric dinner napkins.  Silver mint julep cups are the traditional favorite, but I’m taking the long shot odds the copper plated mint julep cup will make a stylish showing.  Pewter stirrup hors d’oeuvre forks keep the theme going, and the ebony dinner plates from Dollar Tree round out the field.

Derby Decor

Kentucky-Derby-Decor

It isn’t a Derby Day party until traditional Kentucky Derby delicacies are served.  The fresh rosemary in Roasted Brown-Butter Pecans is the perfect taste complement to the minty bite of a Southern strong Mint Julep.  If it doesn’t bite, it isn’t right.

Tea sandwiches spread thick with Benedictine spread and garnished with radishes, pimento, cucumber slices and bacon are bite sized samples of traditional deliciousness, and a classic Run for the Roses Red Velvet cake topped with a gold horse is a Kentucky Derby dessert must.

Halloween Not So Haunted House Favorites: Halloween Decorating Ideas

Friday night lights will apply to more than high school Friday night football games this Halloween. The flicker and glow from jack-o-lanterns, skull sconces and every tricked out decoration in-between will illuminate the evening and catch the eye of the costumed faithful.

Halloween is exciting enough, but when it lands on a fab-Boo-lous Friday night the celebration soars to flying monkeys all hopped up on sugar heights.

flying-monkey“Fly, Fly, Fly.”  Winged Monkey Costume

Halloween decorating has taken on a life all its own in recent years. Decoristas leave no moss covered stone unturned, no craft store unshopped, no Halloween Pinterest board unseen in their search and shop for the ultimate get your Halloween decor on ideas.  I’m a traditional old soul at heart when it comes to my Halloween decorations.  We keep the scarefest very G-rated as not to spook or scare the little ones.  The most frightening thing at our house is the amount of calories in the bowls and bowls of candy, but who’s counting? Black and orange rule the color palette, Monster Mash is the first tune on the Halloween playlist, and I’ve been known to break out an old pair of men’s cowboy boots, jeans, flannel shirt and stacks of yesterday’s news (0ld newspapers) creating a wicked good cowboy to help me pass out candy. Speaking of haunting hits, here’s a few of the Places In The Home Halloween house favorites.

If your ideas of Halloween pumpkin decorating finds you in the no carve pumpkin zone, fret or fright not.

no-carve-pumpkin

Invent your very own throwback Halloween hashtag #TBH and channel decoupage days of basket purses and vintage milk cans past. Spray painted leaves, printables, old photos – get creative and test your mad Mod Podge skills. Glitter stickers, acrylic paint and a decorative furniture or curtain finial lend a designer touch and signature style to your Halloween decorations.

no-carve-pumpkin-ideas

Stylish decorations don’t have to expensive to be impressive. Create fab-BOO-lous Halloween centerpiece magic with a couple of dollar store feather boas, a witches hat, and a rhinestone pin.  You can get more bang for your harvest and Thanksgiving decorating buck by not carving the pumpkin and simply surrounding it with wow factor embellishments. Mingle twinkle lights in and around the feather boas for mood lighting.  Wrap average party paper cups in high Halloween style with ribbon in your favorite designer pattern and color.

designer-Halloween-crafts

I like using fabric for foundation tablecloths and table skirting. Velvet and lace are hot trends at that moment and add an elegant, creepy edge to the festivities.  I stock up on pillar candles and dollar store glass containers and cylinder vases for my Halloween tablescapes.  Glitter, black beans, candy corn or food-color dyed water make great filler choices. This can I give you a hand serving bowl from Target would make a fun centerpiece anchor. Another dollar store run for Spanish moss, red apples and glow-in-the-dark insects and you’re set.

halloween-centerpieces

Paper lunch bags come in handy for Halloween treat bags and light the way luminaires.  For treat bags, I like to glue Halloween themed printables to the front of the bags.  Next, I fill each bag with a generous layer of shredded newspaper, and finish with favors and treats wrapped in glitter tulle.  I cut the tulle so the ends will flow from the tops of the bags.  Using a hole punch, punch a hole through the center of each bag (about 1” down from opening), thread the raffia through and tie together to seal.

Battery-operated LED votive candles produce the perfect flameless lighting for pathway luminaries. Safety first, and this option is a safe alternative to fire burning candles.

From Coast to Coast: Seafood Cuisine of Summer

Tradition & Thoroughbreds: Kentucky Derby Party Ideas

The first weekend in May means it is Kentucky Derby time!  Kentucky Derby party ideas revolve around red roses, mint juleps and fascinating fascinators.  Horse racing reigns supreme in Louisville, and for nearly a century the Early Times Mint Julep has been the traditional beverage of Churchill Downs and the Kentucky Derby.

Run-for-the-roses

Horse racing enthusiasts, socialites and celebrities will flock to Churchill Downs this Saturday to view the Run for the Roses, marvel at the traditional Kentucky Derby hats on parade, and to taste a traditional Kentucky Derby Early Times Mint Julep.  I believe this is an appropriate recipe for this week.

Kentucky-Derby-mint-julep

In  honor of tradition and thoroughbreds, I present to you the Kentucky Derby Early Times Mint Julep recipe served proudly at Churchill Downs.

The Early Times Mint Julep

Ingredients

2 cups sugar

2 cups water

6-8 sprigs of fresh mint

crushed ice

2 ounces Early Times Kentucky Bourbon

Silver Julep Cups (optional, but highly recommended for the full Kentucky Derby traditional experience).

Directions

Make a simple syrup by boiling sugar and water together for five minutes. Cool and place in a covered container with six or eight sprigs of fresh mint, then refrigerate overnight. Make one julep at a time by filling a julep cup with crushed ice, adding one tablespoon mint syrup and two ounces of Early Times Kentucky Bourbon. Stir rapidly with a spoon to frost the outside of the cup. Garnish with a sprig of fresh mint.

I like several small arrangements of cut roses vs. one large centerpiece.   A combination arrangement of red and white roses perfectly fits in with the Run for the Roses motif.

I like to incorporate the traditional aspects of horse racing into my Kentucky Derby party ideas.  The pair of vintage English riding boots I purchased from one of my favorite antique malls, Parkway Antique Mall in Maryville, Tennessee, have sadly been misplaced.  I did however, find the crest riding boots on clearance at JCPenney.

Saturday’s centerpiece will become my new fall fashion boots.  That’s getting your money’s worth.  The black velvet equestrian riding helmet will tie it all together.

Dappled Gray Horse Table Lamp

This dappled gray horse lamp is a great addition to the party and party space.

Horseshoes and horseshoe nut or dip bowl, Kentucky Derby themed fabrics for tablecloth and napkins, mint julep cups, spire salt and pepper shaker set, nickel plated horse bits as napkin rings, and a couple of strategically placed horse and jockey figures and you’ve got a win, place and show-stopping tablescape.

And they’re off!
