Spring Cleaning Tips And Hints For The Spring Clean Fling Of It All

It seems I’ve got the dirt on spring cleaning tips and hints.  My last blog post dealt with digging the spring garden scene, and today’s post deals with spring cleaning scene.

Spring cleaning may not be your idea of fun, but it definitely puts a spic and span spin on things.

Spring comes but once a year as does the spring cleaning cleanapalooza we participate in.

This time of year is synonymous with all things fresh and new, refreshed and updated and spring cleaning tips and hints.

Dirty jobs come with the life lived within our homes territory, and house cleaning is a necessary part of all things house that make a home.

Spring cleaning tips and hints lend a helping hand to the ritualistic spring fling cleaning machine.

It’s those helpful spring cleaning tips and hints help me cut through the muck, gunk and grime left over from winter and rockin’ tunes to spring clean by help me clean and cut a rug.

Boost the cleaning advantage of a less expensive dishwasher soap by adding two teaspoons of white vinegar to your dishwasher.

Boost liquid dish soap by adding two tablespoons baking soda to hot dish water.

For those of you who own sterling silver:
(I’m a Southerner.  Owning at least one piece of sterling silver is a qualification of membership and retains one’s active status in the Southern ladies who lunch and their daughters who entertain club.)

Reed & Barton Francis I 5 Piece Dinner Flatware Set

I advise against washing sterling silver in the dishwasher.

The ingredients in dishwasher soaps prove too harsh and the heat will result in whitening the silver.

If your silver sees a lot of use it usually will not need polishing.

High humidity accelerates the tarnishing process.

Hand wash sterling flatware with a non-lemon-scented liquid dish soap. Lemon-scented dish soaps cause pitting, discoloration and darkening.

Rinse well with hot water and hand dry with a soft towel.

Place your sterling silver and stainless steel flatware in separate dish rack compartments in order to avoid an electrolytic reaction.

I wrap my silver pieces in acid-free tissue and pop them into a Ziplock slider storage bag to prevent tarnishing.

Spring is messy and delicious.

Spring clean it up.

While we are on the subject of dish soaps and how fabulous some brands smell, can you guess which scent is my favorite?

This stuff smells so good!

The dish soap and the room spray are the two products in the line I use, and the clean and the scent delivers.

A fireplace is a wonderful source of comfort and heat on cold winter nights, and the proof of use is left behind on tile floors, mantels, ceiling fans, air conditioning and heat grilles and vent floor covers and surrounding walls.

Discard the vacuum bag after use and begin anew.

To add a fresh scent to an otherwise not so fresh cleaning ritual, add a generous pour of Fresh Scents Scent Packet in White Cotton to a clean vacuum cleaner bag before placing the bag in the vacuum.

I keep a lightweight mop from the dollar store on hand strictly for spring cleaning times like these.

The basic, easy and get the job done cleaning power of warm water and a couple of drops of Dawn is still the best and most gentle household cleaner.

Use a clean mop slightly dampened in a mixture of warm water and Dawn to clean door casings, A/C return air grilles and vents, light fixtures, moldings- all havens of dust and dirt.

Work from the top to bottom of the surfaces to wipe away the dirt.

Rinse mop with clean warm water and repeat steps to rinse.

Freshen up decorative throw pillows and seat cushions using the upholstery brush and crevice tool vacuum attachments to remove seasonal dust.

I treat my medium-sized decorative throw pillows to an air-only cycle run in the dryer for 10 minutes to further freshen.

Spring cleaning presents the perfect opportunity to change out china patterns and update displays.

An open cupboard or one lined with wallpaper is a personal style statement waiting to be admired.

Warmer temps tend to not mix well with the flannel sheets and heavy blankets that kept us warm and cozy all winter long.

Begin by flipping the mattress and giving it a good vacuuming.

Lose the winter blues in favor of crisp cotton linens heavy on seasonal comfort.

The spring fling frame of decorative mind we find ourselves in is ready to lighten things up in pattern, texture and color.

Don’t forget a spritz or two of linen spray.

A light and lovely scent sets the tone for a good night’s slumber.

Linen Spray

1 ½  teaspoon essential oil of your choice

2  Tablespoons witch hazel or vodka

4  cups distilled water

32 oz.  spritz bottle

Mix witch hazel or vodka and desired oils in a bottle.  Add the distilled water and shake to combine.  The witch hazel or vodka aids in dispersing the oil evenly throughout the liquid.  Shake bottle gently before each use.

One of the best ways to experience spring is to open the windows and doors to let the light and fresh air in.

There is no substitute for naturally airing out the house with fresh spring air post pollen season.

Washing windows can be a pane (forgive me, I couldn’t resist) to keep clean.

Although not a spring cleaning favorite, once the decision is made to meet and master the task at hand the result is so worth it!

Coming soon to a clean window near you!

The now, that’s better spring cleaners breaking out into song with the window cleaning hit I can see clearly now the windows are clean.

Window Cleaner

32  ounce spray bottle

2  cups distilled white vinegar

8  Tablespoons lemon juice, fresh or concentrate

2  cups water

Mix the vinegar, lemon juice  and water together in a spray bottle. Use crumbled newspaper to wipe the windows for the simple reason it  keeps streaks to a minimum. If the sun is hot and shining on the window it will promote quick drying resulting in streaks.

To keep windows sliding up and down with ease rub a bar of soap across the track. A quick fix for a small hole in a window screen is clear nail polish. Apply a few layers of polish and allow to dry.

Spring Cleaning Ideas

I know some of you are wondering if Old Man Winter will ever release his grip on these crazy weather patterns.

In the immortal words of Journey, “Don’t Stop Believing.”

Here to stay springtime weather is here, and that means spring cleaning ideas.

So true on me for every Sat & Sun of Spring & Summer...I'm usually covered head to toe in dirt too, just ask my neighbors. I know sunshine & dirt always help me feel better! I highly recomend it or hire a gardener and just sit in the sun!

Dirt belongs in planters and gardens- not in the tub, sink or on countertops.

Spring is the time of year when the call to clean is sounded.

Are you ready to get your spring clean fling on?

My spring cleaning philosophy is simple- into the best styled spaces a little dirt and clutter will fall.

The life lived within our homes can get messy and cluttered.

Cut through the clutter and show off your mad organizational skills with decorative drawer organizers, storage boxes and containers.

The selections range from get the job done efficiency to I spy a DIY project.

Seize the spring cleaning moment and turn those closets and drawers into magazine feature quality works of art.

Moving on to the dirt busting side of things, let’s put spring cleaning into two categories (like a big pill- it’s easier to swallow).

Scrub a dub dub kind of spring cleaning gets the job done with simple solutions.

Let’s freshen up and color up spring cleaning gets the job done by updating and coordinating home decor to the corresponding season.

There’s a gazillion helpful hints, ideas and tips out there.

Here’s a couple of dollar store solutions I spring clean by.

Shower, Tub & Tile

On your next dollar store run pick up these “clean” cleaning essentials: a spray bottle, soft scrub brush, pot and pan brush, soap-dispensing scrub sponge, a couple of toothbrushes, wire basket, shower hook, Dawn dishwashing liquid and vinegar.

Clip the shower hook on the shower side of the rod and hang the wire basket from it.

The wire basket will now be known as supply house central.

It will hold the cleaning supplies but it won’t hold water.

Fill the soap-dispensing scrub sponge with equal parts Dawn dishwashing soap and vinegar.

The Dawn cuts through oily residues, the vinegar deodorizes, and you can simply wipe down the walls each time you shower.

Mix up another batch and pour in the spray bottle for cleaning the fixtures, shower head, bathtub and grout lines.

Use the pot and pan brush as a tub brush, the soft scrub brush for fixtures and the toothbrushes for the shower head and grout lines.

Dryer Vents Need Cleaning Love, Too!

This spring cleaning reminder applies to spring, summer, fall and winter.

Clean the dryer vent after each drying cycle.

Because lint builds up in the dryer vent and reduces the air flow to the dryer.

Signs of lint build-up issues include:

  • Clothes not dry after normal run time (one cycle).
  • Clothes are excessively hot upon removal from dryer.
  • Noticing heat and humidity in the laundry room when dryer is running. Dryer vent could be disconnected or improperly performing.
  • Debris collecting around the dryer vent opening on the outside of your home.  Make sure to include a check of your outside dryer vent.

Removing lint build-up after each cycle helps to reduce the risk of fire hazard.

Take it spring cleaning further by vacuuming around and behind the dryer to further remove lint that has built up during the winter months.

You will also notice how much faster the clothes will dry when the dryer remains lint free.

It’s better to err on the side of caution when it comes to any appliance.

Also, never leave home with the dryer running or while sleeping.

Wooden Surfaces and Tools

Those over at The Kitchn who know all things kitchen bring us this recipe for spoon butter or cutting board cream out of beeswax and sunflower oil.

Spoon butter or cutting board cream protects and moisturizers the wooden kitchen tools and surfaces we love to use in the kitchen.

Butcher blocks and cutting boards as well as wooden spoons and utensils benefit from a spa treatment of the kitchen beneficial kind.

How To Make Spoon Butter

Makes about 3/4 of a pint

1 quart water
2 ounces natural beeswax
8 ounces cold-pressed sunflower oil (or other neutral vegetable oil)

What you’ll need:
2-quart saucepan
Pint mason jar
Pair of wooden or bamboo chopsticks

Combine the beeswax and oil: Place the bars of beeswax in the mason jar, and pour in the sunflower oil.  Heat a quart of water in a small (2-quart) saucepan over medium heat.  Submerge the mason jar into the water. When the water begins to simmer, turn the heat down to low. Gently lower the mason jar into the water, taking care not to splash any water into the jar.

After ten minutes, turn off the heat but leave the pot on the stove. Let the jar sit in the water for ten more minutes.  As the wax melts, use the chopsticks to break up the large pieces, helping them to melt more quickly.

Remove the jar from the water.  All of the wax should have melted into the oil, combining into a golden, translucent liquid.  If there are still pieces of solid wax, give the mixture a good stir with the chopsticks until thoroughly melted.  Let the jar sit for 20 minutes.  The liquid will have begun to cloud over a bit.  Give it a stir, let sit for another 20 minutes, then stir a final time to ensure an evenly mixed, creamy spoon butter.

Leave to cool to room temperature, then cover and store for up to 6 months.

In place of sunflower seed oil, you may use soybean, safflower, flaxseed, or another neutral vegetable oil.

Cast Away Rust In Your Cast Iron Skillet

Apartment Therapy

Got rust?

Let’s solve that problem for you.

Cover the bottom of your cast iron skillet with a semi-thin layer of sea salt. Cut a potato in the center, placing cut side down on top of sea salt to coat. Scrub the bottom of the skillet in a circular motion pan.  Follow through with scrubbing the handle, sides, and exterior bottom of the skillet.  Depending on amount of rust, you may need to repeat process by starting over with clean salt and new potato.

When skillet is clean, rinse it with water and pat dry.  Place skillet on stove burner set to low heat for one minute.

This step dries out any residual moisture.

Now Let’s Season

Add a thin layer of vegetable oil or Crisco to the skillet to lubricate.

Using a soft cloth or paper towel, rub entire skillet and handle to coat.

Line the lower oven rack with aluminum foil.

Preheat oven to 350°F.

Place skillet upside down on top oven rack and “bake” for an hour.

Turn off the oven and leave the pan inside to cool.  Allow skillet to completely cool down.

Spring Cleaning Sachet, Sashay!

Two tips in this department.

Place scented dryer sheets in drawers, stored luggage and the  linen closet for an effective and economical sachet.

While I’m on the subject on fresh scents, here’s a bonus tip for a vacuum cleaner bag sachet, sort of an around the house aromatherapy.

Add a generous scoop of dried lavender to the vacuum cleaner bag for a touch of spring in the air.

Bathtub Grapefruit Salt Scrub

Overtime a bathtub eventually becomes prone to rust lines and rings.

Iron in the water oxidizes and collects on the surface of bathtubs and sinks to create an unsightly orange-red stain.

Household cleansers containing bleach chemically react with the iron in the water which results in more rust.

A natural solution is found in the cleaning combo of one grapefruit and ¼ cup coarse Kosher salt.

Halve the grapefruit and give the top a generous shake of Kosher salt.

Wet the bathtub and spread the remaining salt around the bottom of the tub.

Using the grapefruit in scouring pad fashion, scrub the shower and tub.

Squeeze the juice from the grapefruit on bathtub fixtures for extra cleaning power.

Reapply salt to the grapefruit halves “scrubber” from the salt previously distributed around tub surface.

Rinse well with clean water.
