Nature by Design: What Fall Means To Me

Nature by design is the consummate example of simple yet elegant beauty- what fall means to me.

Seasonal decorating need not be an exercise in expense or exhaustion.

acorns3

Rather your seasonal and soon to be holiday decorating involves pulling out all the stops or spot accents here and there, the idea is to invite the season into your home through a visual essay that expresses what fall means to me.

what fall means to me

Still moving at a slowed post surgical procedure pace means I’m mostly guiding the what fall means to me decorating tour of late.

Dave the Builder and my mother are happy to handle the fetch and feather duties.

Readers of Places In The Home know music beats in the heart and soul of this house.

Music keeps me company in the creative process, and a verse or chorus strikes a note of I’ll groove to that inspiration.

The chorus of singer, pianist, composer, producer and engineer  Carol Duboc’s latest tune, Open the Curtains, mirrors my personal decorating style philosophy.

What fall means to me is obvious in the gorgeous bouquet of white hydrangeas from my mother and the fall is in the house display Dave the Builder picked up at Kroger.

Pumpkin Pie Spice Sugar Scrub

Good morning, afternoon or evening, friends!

Friday is in sight or here which is always a plus.

Fall is getting its look and feel on, the small surgical procedure I had Tuesday went well, and I love the way the homemade Pumpkin Pie Spice Sugar Scrub turned out.

Anesthesia is drying, and knowing this I wanted to have a hand scrub on hand.

Looking ahead to more fall decorating with the branches and cuttings soon to fill ironstone pitchers and the demijohn Dave the Builder recently found in his rounds, I quickly recalled that getting to and cutting down the aforementioned branches and cuttings do a number on your hands.

Put the pumpkin pie seasoning in the coconut (oil, that is) and treat your hands to a fabulous Pumpkin Pie Spice Sugar Scrub in the morning.

Or noon.

Or night.

You get the point.

pumpkin-pie-scrub

After a day filled with political mudslinging from every channel, network and streaming site, am I the only one who feels like a day at the spa treatment is in order?

Pumpkin Pie Spice Sugar Scrub has got you and your hands covered.

This scrub is super emollient, softens immediately, and can I just tell you- the scent is fall in a bottle.

Mexican vanilla and pumpkin pie spice marry together in notes of fall fragrant harmony.

For the hands:

Dampen hands with tepid water.  Apply a small amount of pumpkin pie spice sugar hand scrub and gently massage in a circular movement to exfoliate and renew skin.  Rinse well with warm water and gently pat dry.

To further promote  at home spa experience,  apply a small amount of your favorite hand cream to seal in the moisture and protect.

Tidbits Of All Things House That Make a Home Information

Today I am sharing tidbits of all things house that make a home information.

A design, decorating, dish and detail show and tell resource of information is what drives us here at Places In The Home.

And away we go!

and-away-we-goJackie Gleason

In a recent survey of home decor consumers, the colors blue and purple top the list of color preference when selecting the decorative throw pillows to decorate their humble abode with.

blue-purple-pillows

Consumers tastes and preferences also trend toward patterned throw pillows.

Buster-kittySir Kitty Kat

Fleas drives me crazy.

What a swing in subject matter, but into every household an unwanted guest of the bug species will creep in.

We’ve been fortunate over the many years of our pet ownership to only contend with fleas inside the house once.

That is until last month when I noticed we had company.

Sir Kitty Kat aka the culprit gifted the entire house with fleas.

Flea bombing the house with unwanted chemicals was out of the question, and calling an exterminator would be an option of last resort.

After conducting a quick google search for help, I decided to go with a natural, safe and inexpensive alternative.

borax information

Is 20 Mule Team Borax a detergent booster or is it a miracle flea be gone treatment?

It’s both!

I used 2 boxes of 20 Mule Team Borax over a two week period.

Patience and persistence paid off.

We treated Sir Kitty Kat with a topical flea treatment under our veterinarian’s advisement.

Kitty was scratching to take up residence outdoors for a few days, and admittedly I was happy to oblige him.

I purchased a plastic storage container, a broom, rubber gloves and a box of disposable face masks from the dollar store.

You’ll need two(2) new empty vacuum cleaner bags- one to use during treatment and a fresh new one for after treatment.

Perform a discoloration test by selecting a small area and applying the Borax to rule out the possibility of discoloration.

I only treated the carpet, rugs and floors with the Borax.

I did not use it on fabric or upholstered furniture.

What You Do:

Fill the storage container about 3/4 full per room with 20 Mule Team Borax.

Lightly dust floors, carpets, and rugs with Borax along baseboards, under furniture, in closets.

Use the broom to work the Borax into the carpet.

The Borax dries out the fleas and larvae.

I let the Borax do its thing in the carpet for one week.

Overkill for sure, but we were on a flea killing mission.

Vacuum up the Borax, discard the vacuum bag into a garbage bag and immediately place outside, and pop in a new vacuum bag.

I’ve got the hem tape thing down to a science!

I’ve been called a lot of things in my lifetime, but seamstress is not one of them and rightly so.

All those years ago in high school home economics class I aced the cooking part of the semester.

Sewing cooked my goose.

I come from a long line of no-sew seamstresses.

Button detail and hem tape I’ve mastered, but that’s it for my sewing prowess.

640px-pincushion-tomato

Pincushion curiosity struck while staring at the tomato pincushion that was my mother’s mother’s mother, trying to decide if I really needed the button to be on the pant and not in the drawer.

After consulting with the fountain of information guru that is Google, the what and the why a strawberry is attached to the tomato pincushion mystery was solved.

Emory powder is the filler source for the strawberry.

The powder is an abrasive, and serves as a cleaner of rust and sharpener of pins and needles.

Glad that’s answered.

I was on pins and needles.

crazy-chocolate-cake

Crazy cake is crazy easy and crazy good.

Do you ever look at recipes and projects and wonder if they really are that easy, that tasty and worth the effort?

You now have it on good authority that this easy peasy crazy cake is.

One pan and no eggs- I love this concept.

Crazy Cake

Ingredients

3 cups all-purpose flour

2 cups white sugar

1 teaspoon salt

2 teaspoons baking soda

½ cup unsweetened cocoa powder

3/4 cup vegetable oil

2 Tablespoons distilled white vinegar

2 teaspoons vanilla extract

2 cups cold water

Directions

Sift flour, sugar, salt, soda, and cocoa together into a 9 x 13 inch ungreased cake pan.  Make three wells. Pour oil into one well, vinegar into second, and vanilla into third well.  Pour cold water over all, and stir well with fork.

Bake at 350 degrees for 30 to 40 minutes, or until tooth pick inserted comes out clean.

To frost or not to frost.

That is the question only your personal preference can answer.

frosting-caramel

I did not frost the first chocolate crazy cake and it was delicious.

I did frost the second chocolate crazy cake with Duncan Hines Salted Caramel frosting topped off with coarse sea salt, and it was scrumptious.

Tasty tailgating recipes for tailgating times are on my mind.

Tailgating sets the pregame football excitement in motion.

Pub-Style Pretzels and Beer Cheese Sauce

Ingredients

1 ½ cups warm water

1 packet active yeast

4 cups all-purpose flour (will need extra for kneading)

1 teaspoon salt

1 tablespoon sugar

1 large egg

½ tablespoon sea salt

1 tablespoon flavored seasoning of your choice (This recipe uses McCormick Grill Mates Molasses & Bacon)

Smoked Gouda and Cheddar Beer Sauce

Ingredients
Yield: about one cup

½ cup of beer (This recipe uses Sierra Nevada for its strong taste. Use a

wheat beer or blonde ale for a milder taste.)

½ cup grated smoked Gouda

½ cup grated sharp cheddar

2 tablespoons sour cream

1 ½ tablespoons flour

¼ teaspoon ground mustard

¼ teaspoon paprika

salt & pepper to taste

Directions

Preheat oven to 425 degrees F.  Place a non-stick baking mat on a cookie sheet.

In a large mixing bowl, add yeast to warm water.  Stir until dissolved.  Stir in salt and sugar.  Once mixed, add flour one cup at a time.  Mix thoroughly until dough is thick and no longer sticky.

Create a floured surface for kneading.  Knead dough for approximately 5 minutes.  Separate dough into even sections, about six.

Roll dough into ropes, making width even throughout.  Make pretzel shapes by creating a circle with the dough.  Twist ends and press down to finish shape.

On a plate, mix sea salt and seasoning together for sprinkling.  Beat egg in a small bowl and brush on pretzel tops.  Place pretzels on baking sheet, and sprinkle salt mixture on top.

Bake for 10 minutes.  After the first 5 minutes, switch to broil.  Keep an eye on them to avoid over-browning.  Remove from oven and serve warm with beer cheese dip.

Smoked Gouda and Cheddar Beer Sauce

In small saucepan, heat beer on low until it bubbles. Slowly whisk in flour, then add cheese (Image 3).  Whisk until smooth.

Add sour cream, mustard and paprika while whisking.  Add more flour for a thicker sauce, or more beer for a thinner sauce.  Sprinkle salt and pepper to taste.  Yield: 6-8 pretzels

Now to the seasonal updating with fall decorating favorites portion of our show…

I’ve been looking “foyer” to this seasonal update for quite some time.

The wallpaper I selected for my Mother’s Day gift (Mother’s Day 2015) is finally up where it belongs.
